Mrs. Gertrude Brown Grant was born on August 27, 1917, to the late Reverend William ‘Boney’ Brown, Sr. and Lillian Nancy Brown on Pinckney Island, SC. The family later moved to Hilton Head Island, SC where she grew up and attended the local schools. Gertrude completed the 9th grade of the local schools (the highest available grade at that time). She was the youngest of five, all of whom preceded her in death.
Gertrude was baptized at an early age and joined Queen Chapel AME Church on Hilton Head Island. She served faithfully as a member of the Stewardess Board and the Women’s Missionary Society until her health failed. Gertrude was also the “Mother of the Church.” Gertrude worked for many years in housekeeping at various motels and resorts on the Island. She was well known for her quilting, canning and farming expertise. She also excelled as a businesswoman producing and selling fruits and vegetables at the family owned fruits and vegetables stand nine months out of each year.
On January 27, 1943, Gertrude, affectionately known as “Gertie”, was united in Holy Matrimony to Solomon Grant, Sr., who preceded her in death after more than fifty-five years of marriage. To this union, seven children were born.
On Monday, July 30, 2018, Gertrude transitioned from labor to reward and rest in the presence of the Almighty God. Preceding her in death were two children, Beaulah and William; two sons in law, David Aiken, Sr. and Louis King, Jr.; one grandson, Darryal Lamont Grant, and granddaughter, Dawn Grant.
She leaves to cherish her memories and carry on her legacy, five children: Estelle Grant Aiken of Hilton Head, SC, Solomon Eddie Grant, Jr. of Hilton Head, SC, Cornell Grant, Sr. (Lolita) of Ellenwood, GA, Lillian Grant King of Yemassee, SC, and Rev. Debbie Grant Neal (Presiding Elder Nathaniel) of Richmond Hill, GA; thirteen grandchildren, Jason McNeil (Irma), David Aiken, Jr., Christine Natashia Aiken, Cornell Grant, Jr. (Heather), Rolaughn Grant, Tameka Frazier, Samone Frazier (Edward), Courtney Aiken, Jamil D. Grant (Shenise), Keliah B. King, Latoria Grant, Joshua L. King, and Nathanel C. E. Neal; fifteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one special daughter in law, Dessie Frazier Grant; one special granddaughter in law, Corrine Dougherty Grant; also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mother Gertrude B. Grant, 100, of Hilton Head Island, SC died Monday, July 30, 2018, at her residence on Hilton Head Island. She was the mother of Estelle Aiken, Lillian Grant- King, Debbie Grant- Neal, Cornell Grant, Sr. and Solomon E. Grant, Jr. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Friday, August 3, 2018, at Queen Chapel AME Church on Hilton Head Island, SC. Funeral services will be held 11 am Saturday, August 4, 2018, also at Queens Chapel AME Church. Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort in charge.
