Pastor Charlie Powell, Sr. Obituary

Pastor Charlie Powell, Sr., son of the late Isaiah and Ella Powell, one of ten children, and a native of the state of South Carolina, lived all of his life in Beaufort County. Pastor Powell married the love of his life, First Lady Jessie Mae Powell. They became the proud parents of six children, Charlene, Charlie, Jr. (Big Boy), Judy, Kenneth, Mary and Lionel Powell. Pastor Charlie Powell, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, was known to many as “Uncle Bud”, the “Car Body Repair Man” and to a host of others as “Daddy”. Pastor Powell was a renowned gospel music artist, performing with many gospel groups in the Beaufort area. Most memorable, Pastor Powell was a vocalist with the Exciting Bible Tones of Beaufort and served as the group’s Master of Ceremonies and Statesman. He was a community activist. He coached neighborhood baseball teams in the Burton area. He was successful in keeping young men on the fields and out of trouble. His ministry in keeping with God’s plans for his life would lead him on a journey throughout the community where he made a difference by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. Pastor Powell’s service to the Lord began at the historic Horse Pond Baptist Church, where he served for many years as a Finance Officer and Deacon. Pastor Powell often testified how the Lord called him to minister, but he denied the calling for thirteen and a half years before taking up the cross. Pastor Powell attended the Sumter, South Carolina based Morris College, where he earned his Certification, and later became an ordained minister of the gospel at Horse Pond Baptist Church. Pastor Powell shepherded the Laurel Bay Baptist Church and the Good Will Baptist Church for many years. Pastor Powell experienced tremendous growth in his knowledge of God’s scriptural teachings. In 2003 inspired by God, Pastor Powell founded the Good News Baptist Church. It was then that he heard the still small voice of the Holy Spirit beckoning him to rename the church “Good News”. Pastor Powell understood that there could be no “Good Will” without the “Good News” as the foundation. His mission was to encourage people to believe that no matter where you came from and what circumstances you faced, that God has a divine plan for your life. He believed that the service of his ministry is to lift up the name of Jesus through sound doctrine, so that others may hear the “Good News” and be blessed and delivered. The greatest sermon he ever gave was his life. He had a passion for saving souls. He leaves to cherish loving memories, his wife, Jessie Mae Powell; his children Charlene (Donald) Lopes, Charlie Powell, Jr., Judy Powell Crawford, Kenneth (Joyce) Powell, Mary (Cedric) Edwards and Lionel (Jennifer) Powell; grandchildren, Kimberly Powell Fields, Erica Crawford, Jessica Lopes, Cedric Edwards, Zebulon Powell, Kenneth Powell, Jr., Shanika Osborne, Sheena Powell; a host of loving great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
