Rosa R. Sumpter

Mother Rosa Roberts Sumpter, daughter of the late Ned Francis and Eliza Roberts was born September 29, 1924, in Colleton County, South Carolina.
She was the oldest of her five siblings who have passed on. She attended the public school in Colleton County, South Carolina. In the mid 1940’s. She was blessed with three daughters, Beatrice, Rena and Freddie Lee.
As time went on, Rosa met the love of her life, Mr. Louise Sumpter, Sr. They were united in Holy Matrimony on February 28, 1952 in Colleton County, South Carolina. After marriage she moved to Sheldon, SC. To this union, eight children were born. She also took in her two grandchildren, Tarsha Sumpter and William Sumpter until they were adults.
As life went on, Rosa accepted Christ and was baptized. She attended various churches, which includes, Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Jonesville, SC, Shady Gove Baptist, Sheldon, SC and SpringHill AME Church in which she took full membership.
Rosa was always a hard worker. The majority of her life she worked as a migrant worker until later on in her life she worked as shrimp peeler at the Blue Channel in Grays Hill, SC. She loved cooking, sewing and listening to her radio in her spare time. She would always sit in her window and listen to her music. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friends. She would always say, “Do more right than what wrong you get yourself in” and “If your brother give you stone you give him bread.” She always had an encouraging word to tell every and anyone. She will be sadly missed. 
On Wednesday, October 30, 2019, she answered the master’s call and departed this life at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Sumpter, Sr.; her sons, Jesse and Louis Sumpter, Jr. and her daughter, Beatrice Washington.
Mother Rosa leaves to forever cherish her unforgettable memories: five daughters, Rena Wright (David), Freddie Lee Brown (Keil), Bobby Blair (Mack) all of Yemassee, SC, Lillie Mae Moultrie (Sonny) and Geraldine Sumpter both of Sheldon, SC; three sons, Leroy Sumpter, Ronald Sumpter (MaryAnn) and Glen Sumpter all of Sheldon, SC; two sisters, Nancy Carlisle and Jeanette Francis of Miami, FL; two brothers, Robert Lee Francis (Ruth) of Roadside, SC, Edward Francis (Bert) of New York, NY; son in law, Henry Singleton of Sheldon, SC; daughter in law, Alethia Sumpter of Sheldon, SC; 25 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; to include three very special friends, Patty Revels Edgington of Iowa, Paul Smith of Sheldon, SC and LouAnn Major of Seabrook, SC.
