Cornelius Washington, 102, of Seabrook, SC passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at his residence. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort. We welcome you to provide your thoughts and memories on our Tribute Wall.
Deacon Cornelius Washington was born on December 3, 1918 in Seabrook, SC. He was the third child born to the late Sinclair and Florence Washington.
He was married to Catherine Duncan Washington for 54 years. To this union two loving daughters was Annie and Mary.
Deacon Washington was a member of Second Gethsemane Baptist Church which was found and built by his grandfather, Rev. Shadrick Manigo. He was a faithful ordained deacon for 48 years. He will always be remembered for his joyful singing and sincere prayers. His favorite pass time was teaching and preaching the Word of God. He was a very wise man who shared his wisdom freely with a contagious smile. He shared wonderful life lessons, like, “Stay out of bad company”.
He was a United States Army Veteran who served in the first black Army platoon: The 555th Battalion better know as “The Triple Nickles” (First Black Smoke Jumpers and Paratroopers) and during World War II. He was a retired federal employee with 35 years of excellent service- Numerous Awards. He was a life time NAACP member and also served as president of the Burton Dale Branch.
On Wednesday, December 30, 2020, Deacon Washington heard the sweet sound of God calling him home. He answered God’s call. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sibling: Marion Washington, Geneva Washington, Lawrence Washington, Frankie Washington and Sadie Jenkins.
He leaves to cherish his memory, two loving daughters: Annie Calloway of Huntsville, Ala. And Mary A. Harris of Seabrook, SC, three grandsons, Bertram Calloway, Alaric Calloway both of Huntsville, Ala, Nykema Harris, North Brunswick, NJ, five great-grandchildren; one sister -in- law Missionary Lucinda Washington of Seabrook, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
