On August 25, 1974, in Beaufort South Carolina, Darrell Mullen was born into a world that would soon be brightened by his infectious spirit. He was the cherished son of Alphonso Mullen and Lucille Kelson-Mullen, and his life was a testament to love, faith, and the power of positivity.
Darrell was educated in Beaufort County Schools and the Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence. From the early days of 6th grade, his love for music flourished. He played several instruments throughout his school years, with his crowning achievement being his role in the high school marching band, where he mastered the quad drums. Darrell also participated in MCJROTC program, and his dedication to excellence was evident in everything he did. He proudly graduated from Battery Creek High School, earning his diploma and setting the stage for a life filled with purpose and passion
At the tender age of twelve, Darrell accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. His faith was unwavering and sustained him throughout his entire life. Darrell’s ministry was outside of the four walls. He spoke encouragement and positivity to everyone. He was the epitome of kindness and caring about others. He had the type of spirit that drew others to him. He never met a stranger, but instead made others feel accepted and loved. His positive impact will be forever etched in the hearts of his family, friends and acquaintances. His presence was a gift, and even during his hospital stay, he inspired doctors and nurses with his unwavering faith, earning the title of “inspiring light.”
Darrell was blessed with a multitude of talents. He was a master carpenter, a musician who started playing the guitar at the age of five, and a skilled drummer and keyboardist. He was also a talented songwriter, with one of his compositions copyrighted in 2018. Music wasn’t just a hobby for Darrell; it was the very essence of his being.
In his professional life, Darrell wore many hats. He worked as a sales representative for Heilig Meyers Furniture Company, a delivery person for Bennie Estate Auction Inc., and a customer service assistant at Lowe’s. He also worked alongside his father at Al’s Interior and Exterior Trim Company and as a musician. After his father’s passing, Darrell became self-employed, using his mastery in building to create residential steps and decks where his craftsmanship truly shined.
Darrell was preceded in death by his father, Alphonso Mullen, and his brother, Alphonso Ray Mullen. On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Darrell peacefully went home to be with the Lord.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for his loving mother, Lucille Kelson-Mullen; his children, Tyqwon Mullen, Desiree Mullen-Alexander, Daryl Mullen, Tye ’anna Washington, and Xavier Smith; four sisters, Tammy Mullen-Campbell of Columbia, SC, Sylvia (Darryl) Littlejohn of New Castle, DE, Paula (Sylvester) Clark Sr. of Augusta, GA, and Alanda (Cephus) Jenkins of Grays Hill, SC; one grandson, Giovanni Washington; a great aunt, Ethel Haskin of Muskegon MI; three aunts, Jannie (Lee) Singleton of Beaufort SC, Jannie (Anthony) Cuevas of Beaufort SC, and Zelma Kelso of Whitsett, NC; four uncles, James H. Mullen of Kingsland, GA, James D. Mullen of Leland, MS, Frank (Roberta) Mullen of Dale, SC, and Calvin (Irish) Mullen of Port Royal SC, and Walter Thomas of Lady’s Island, Sc. He also leaves behind a special and devoted friend and companion, Lorretta Chambers, a host of caring cousins, a niece, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. Two special little people, Kinzlee and RJ also held a special place in Darrell’s heart.
Darrell never liked saying “goodbye.” Instead, he would always say “later,” a reflection of his deep faith and belief that in Christ, there is no final farewell – only a temporary parting until we meet again. So, to our dear sweet Darrell, this isn’t “goodbye”; it’s “LATER.”
Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024 1pm at Burton New Church of Christ.
