Deacon Joseph Young, Jr., 80, of Ridgeland, SC passed away at his residence on Monday, November 7, 2022. Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Funeral Home. We welcome you to provide your thoughts and memories on our tribute wall.
Joseph Young, Jr., was born on Chelsea Plantation in Ridgeland SC on February 16, 1942, to the union of the late Hattie McDonald Young and Joseph Young, Sr. He attended and graduated from Beaufort County Schools, Michel C. Riley Class of 1965.
On July 17, 1970, Joseph was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Louise Washington Young. They shared 45 years of loving marriage until her death in December 2015.
Still affectionally known by some family members as “Pig”, Joseph became a master carpenter and built and renovated many homes and businesses in the Beaufort, Jasper, SC and Savannah, GA areas for over 60 years. His craftmanship can be seen in the beloved, St. Luke Baptist Church. In his younger years along with carpentry, he also cut hair on Saturday afternoons and tied many shirt ties on Sunday mornings in preparation for Sunday service.
Joseph dedicated his life to Jesus in the early 70’s under the leadership of Rev. Ned D. Washington at the St. Luke Baptist Church. He served faithfully as the church’s Treasurer and Chairman Deacon for over 40 years. He was also a founding member of the Low Bottom Community Cemetery Committee.
If you knew Joseph, you understood, he didn’t talk responsibility, he lived it. He was a hard worker who took providing for his family and serving God fervently. Some of his favorite sayings were, “Tighten Up” and “Uh-Oh is too late.” His favorite scripture was Psalm 121:1-2, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth”.
Joseph departed this life set for glory on Monday, November 7, 2022. In addition to his parents: he was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter: Allison Young Brown, sister: Frances Louise Lawyer, brother: Moses Young, brothers in law: Ben, James and Robert Washington, Rueben Taylor and sisters in law: Polly Ann Young and Elizabeth Washington
He leaves to cherish his memories: his children: Joseph Micheal Young, III, Ridgeland, SC, Josephette (Markello) Dotson, Myrtle Beach, SC and Myron (Sheena) Young, Fayetteville, NC; son in love: Alphonso Brown, Ridgeland SC; his siblings: Mary Ruth Mike, Okatie, SC, Joseph Fields, Savannah, GA, and Ethel Wilson, Bluffton, SC; brothers and sisters in law: Nathan Lawyer, Ridgeland, SC, Virginia (Willie) Owens, Okatie, SC, Alice (Harold) Pinckney, Beaufort, SC, Sam (Dorothy) Washington, Savannah, GA, Arthur (Martha) Washington, Waitsfield, Vermont, Estella Taylor and Ida Mae Washington, Hilton Head, SC; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three god children, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
