Mattie Marie Wideman, 72, of the Cherry Hill Community in Ridgeland, SC heard the call of the Lord and entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 9, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Ridgeland, SC on January 3, 1948, to Daisy Bailey and the late Ellie Gregory of Ridgeland, SC.  Mattie Wideman was educated in the Jasper County School System where she graduated from Jasper high school in 1965.   After graduation, Mattie relocated to New York City where she completed her degree in nursing and began her career which included taking care of family, and friends.

Mattie’s nursing career spanned from New York throughout South Carolina, which included the VA hospital in Charleston, SC, Beaufort Memorial Hospital, and retired from the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, SC, where she was considered the nurse of the Lowcountry.  She was a faithful member of the Gullah Church Nursing Association, whereas she supported, and hosted health fairs throughout the Low Country.

Mattie’s greatest joy in life was her family, whom she enjoyed spending time with.  She was a faithful member of First Euhaw Baptist Church and found much pleasure in serving on numerous boards, such as the pastor aide, mother board, secretary of the charity axillary, and an active member of the trustee ministry until her illness.  Sister Mattie helped to organize the first youth department, she was also involved in willing workers and the food bank ministry.

Mattie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 25 years, the late Deacon Walter Wideman, Sr.

It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to a wonderful and beloved mother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, godmother, friend, and neighbor. Sister Mattie will be greatly missed but never forgotten.  May our tears of pain and grief today become tears of joy and happiness tomorrow, as we remember how our lives were enriched by the love, kindness, and blessings she shared.
