Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are
many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
God graced the spirit of our beloved Dorothy Grant Hartley, age 72 of St. Helena’s Island, SC to a
holy, eternal rest on Saturday, August 5, 2023. She was born to the late Teacher James Grant and
Mother Delphine Grant on January 16, 1951.
Dorothy was truly the middle child. She was the 8 th of fifteen children. Dorothy attended
Beaufort Technical College before leaving South Carolina at a young age to follow her sisters to
Jersey City, New Jersey. Finding that city life was not for her, Dorothy returned to South Carolina
where she began her career at Beaufort Memorial Hospital working the night shift in the
emergency room. Before long Dorothy married and moved to Oxon Hill, Maryland. She worked
several jobs but ultimately dedicated most of her hours caring for her daughter Amanda who was
born with cerebral palsy. She lived in Maryland for several years before returning to South
Carolina to care for her brother Eddie. During that time, she returned to Beaufort Memorial
Hospital and worked in the Surgery Unit where she remained until she retired in 2013.
Dorothy was affectionately known as “Dot,” “Grace,” “the one that worked at the hospital,” “Aunt
Dot,” “Grandma Dot,” “Ma,” and “Mother!” Unlike many of the Grants, she didn’t talk a lot and
she didn’t talk loudly, but when she spoke, everyone knew to listen. She always told the truth,
regardless of how it came out. She was short with her words, but strong with her delivery.
Dorothy was a truly devoted mother and grandmother. She was blessed with two daughters,
Dione and Amanda, and although he was not born to her, she gained a devoted son in Roger. She
poured out her love and dedicated herself to the care of her disabled daughter, Amanda,
showering her with trips, clothes, and all the love she could muster until Amanda’s untimely
death.
She considered herself both mother and daughter to Dione as she would always say “so you think
you’re my mother, Dione? You are so bossy! I mean big time bossy!” While she playfully
complained about Dione’s demeanor, she loved to sit back and enjoy being taken care of, once
providing a “bucket list” of places she wanted to visit. Paris, Las Vegas, and Hawaii were her
favorites, she visited every place she had on her list.
Dorothy spread her love quietly until it came to her love for her only grandchild, Essence.
Everyone within earshot knew of everything Essence did or wanted to do as Dorothy was
Essence’s biggest fan!
Dorothy dedicated herself to Jesus Christ at an early age and was a member of Life House Church
for many years. She visited her “home” church, Oaks True Holiness Church as often as she could.
She could often be heard singing “Yes Jesus Loves Me” or “Jesus HE will fix it!” Despite her own
schedule, family and friends were Dorothy’s passion and delight. While she touted that “cooking
isn’t my calling,” she loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends over a good
meal. She would often ask for “hams and yams!”
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Dione Grant Neely (Roger) & her
granddaughter, Essence Neely all of McDonough, GA; three sisters, Shirley Washington of
Charlotte, NC; Veronica Ferrell (John) of Ft. Washington, MD; Alva Jean Gadson of Walterboro, SC;
three brothers, Nelson Grant, Arnold Grant, Ronald Grant (Teresa) all of Saint Helena’s Island, SC;
Two sisters-in-law: Wille Mae Grant and Earnestine Grant of Saint Helena’s Island, SC; and a host
of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and close friends.
Dorothy’s family appreciates the support, kind words and outpouring of love. We also wish a very
special thank you to all of those who cared for her over the years. A very special thank you to
Lynn Grant, Tiara Johnson, Alicia Green, Carolina Care Caregivers, Melanie Daniels, and Nelshele Grant and her children for loving “Grace” and making her last few months lived with dignity in her home.
