James Edward Arnold Sr. was the middle child out of thirteen children born to the late Jodie and Phoebe Jones Arnold on February 23, 1933 in Greenville County, South Carolina. He was educated in the Greenville County School System. After James finished school, he started working as a truck driver. In the 1970s, he worked for Neil Hudson as a car mechanic in Walterboro, SC. James also did work as a farmer in the Ruffin area of South Carolina. He worked until he became disabled and received his Social Security benefits in the late 1980s. He attended Deep Creek Baptist Church beginning as far back as the late 1970s. James endured many events in his life that cannot be otherwise explained besides being miracles. He was born during the polio era, and became a victim of polio, by the grace of God he survived, and was still able to walk. In the early 1970s, he was involved in a wreck where his truck was hit by a train. James walked away with an injury to his kidney and multiple scratches. The most recent miraculous event was in 2018, when James recovered from a blood thinner medication error that had him on the brink of death. He went on to survive another four years after that and continued making memories with his loved ones.
On June 18, 2022 around three thirty in the morning, James took his last earthly breath and left for his eternal life. He was preceded by his parents, Jodie and Phoebe Jones Arnold; and five siblings, Maggie Ramsey, Hattie Meekins, Annie Shaw, Walter Arnold, Joe N. Arnold, and one grandson that died in a car accident.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie Estell Arnold; sons John (Dot) of Greenville, SC, James (Heather) of North Augusta, SC, Jodie (Candace) of Ruffin, SC, Peace (Tiffany) of North Augusta, SC, and daughters Shirley (Nathaniel) Shumate and Frankie Arnold, both of Greenville, SC. He also leaves behind a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. James is also survived by siblings: Sue (Charles) Collins and Betty (Charlie) Drummond both of Greenville, SC, and Nancy Whitner of Pelzer, SC; and brothers, Mac (Vonda) Arnold and Isaac (Gaylyn) Arnold both of Pelzer, SC.
