On May 15, 1931, God blessed the late James and Nazarene Sneed with
a remarkable son, Leroy Sneed. He was one of four children. Leroy was
preceded in death by his parents. He completed his earthly journey on
January 16, 2023, at 6:25 p.m.
Mr. Sneed was born and raised in Beaufort, SC. He attended the Beaufort
County Training School, he also attended Denmark Technical School for
Barbering and the Avery Trade School, where he earned a certificate in
barbering. He became a professional licensed barber and continued to
service the community tirelessly. He enjoyed cutting hair, talking to his
customers and discussing politics. It would be difficult to find a young
man in the community who had not sat in Mr. Sneed’s chair. He opened
his barbershop in Ridgeland in 1954 and also opened a shop in Hilton
Head, SC.
Leroy Sneed married Alice Youmans Sneed and of this marriage, they
were blessed with two daughters, Vanessa Watts and Colanthia ‘Gail’
Brockington. When Mr. Sneed moved to Jasper County, he moved into
the Mitchellville area. He joined New Zion Baptist Church and served the
church in many capacities throughout the years.
Mr. Sneed was quoted saying, “I enjoy doing three things: political life, I
enjoy being a barber and I enjoy playing checkers.” All three, he did well.
Mr. Sneed became Councilman Sneed and served on Jasper County Council
for 12 years, serving as chairman and on other boards and commissions.
He served with dignity and distinction and vowed to be honest with people
he served. In 2019, the state of SC honored Mr. Sneed by naming the road
in which he lived and served the ‘Councilman Leroy Sneed Road’.
Councilman Sneed was a ‘one of a kind’ gem to all of Jasper. He was faithful
to his mission to make a mark on all people he met. He was a ‘gamechanger’
to the young black men of Jasper. Because of his dedication, he
was a founding member of the Dedicated Men of Jasper. This mentoring
organization changed countless lives in Jasper. Some of the other
organizations he served were Boys and Girls Club, Vista Program, COPS
and NAACP, Jasper Rotary Club, Lowcountry Council of Governments
and the Voter Education Project. He was a great mentor.
He leaves to cherish his life memories and legacy: his wife, Alice Youmans
Sneed; two daughters, Evangelist Vanessa Watts (Bridgeport, Connecticut),
Colanthia ‘Gail’ Brockington (Ridgeland, SC), two sons–in-law, Elder
George Watts (Bridgeport, Connecticut) and Richard Brockington
(Ridgeland, SC), three grandchildren; Kyrie, Romaine and Kemira
Brockington (all of Ridgeland, SC); four great-grandchildren; Kevonna
Brockington, Paris Brockington Paige Brockington, Kai’lyn A. Jenkins (all
of Ridgeland, SC ; two sisters; Lillie Mae (Earl) Middleton (of Savannah,
Ga and Helen Bryant (Beaufort, SC; one brother, James Sneed, Jr. (of
Beaufort, SC); and two sisters-in–law; Margaret Simmons (of Bridgepart,
Connecticut and Hythenia (George) Cunningham (of Roanoke, Va.);
in addition, he considered three young men as his honorary sons; John
Willis, Ronnie Fraser and Eddie “Grape” Burns (all of Ridgeland, SC).
To continue his spirit, Leroy’s light will continue to shine in his nieces,
nephews, cousins and loving friends.
Special acknowledgments lovingly goes to the Mervin Family, Shirley
Cameron, Eddie “Grape” Burns, Alan “Cadillac” Wright and James Adam,
Sr. “Bubbie”, who all were his extended Mitchellville family.
