Mae Belle Johnson, 93, a native of St. Helena Island passed away Sunday, January 15, 2023. Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Funeral Home. The Funeral Service for MaeBelle Johnson will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 12 Noon at Bethesda Christian Fellowship (St. Helena Island). The interment will follow in Orange Grove Baptist Church.
MaeBelle Johnson was born on May 26, 1929 to James Washington and Henrietta Johnson in Beaufort, SC.
After graduating from Penn Center School she moved to Boston, Massachusetts. MaeBelle retired from the United States Postal Service in April of 1990 and joined several organization which include The Red Hat Society and Order of the Eastern Stars. She loved serving her local community. She sang loud and proud as a standing member of St. Helena Senior Center, but most of all, she enjoyed singing for the Lord as a member of Orange Grove Baptist Church. Not only was she a member of the choir there, she also ushered at Concord Baptist in Boston where she served as a trustee. She loved baking, cooking and gardening. Her family will miss those elephant ears.
On Sunday, January 15, 2023, MaeBelle was called from labor to reward. She will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her two sons, Charles (Shirley) and Jerry (Doretha) Johnson; her sister Helen Capers (David); brother Harold Washington, Aunt Viola S. Jenkins and sister-in-law Delores Washington. MaeBelle leaves behind 4 grandchildren: April (T.J. Jr), Charles, Duan and Kareem as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and family friends.
