Martha Gilbert Obituary

Martha Gilbert, 86, made her final transition on October 11, 2024.  in Ft. Pierce, FL She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend.  She was a native of Beaufort, SC. Viewing will be held Saturday, October 26, 2024 from 11am-1pm at Allen Funeral Home Chapel in Beaufort, SC. Burial will follow in the Bonny Hall Plantation Cemetery in Big Estate, SC. 

 

 

Martha Irene Gilbert was born on April 6, 1938, in Beaufort, SC to the late Rufus Miles and Addie Barnwell Miles. She was one of eighteen children. She was educated in the public schools of Beaufort, South Carolina.

She later moved to Florida after marrying the late Robert Lee Gilbert with whom she bore five children.

Matha was raised and nurtured by loving God-fearing Christian parents. Who taught her the importance of family and hard work. She grew to be a strong provider for her family. She was a housekeeper for many years for the Taggard family. Her diligent manner and work ethic later led to her employment as a CNA with Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital in 1968 and later Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for over 30 years. 

She was a Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church member for many years, under the leadership of Pastor Armstrong.  Later in life Martha heart turned towards service and she became a volunteer with Macedonia Seventh-day Adventist Church Food pantry. She would often find those in need and provide food and clothing. It brought joy to her life to give back to the community.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Alfred Gilbert; one grandson: Toborrius Smith; fifteen siblings; and a host of family members with whom she is now reunited.

Left to cherish her memories are her son: Ronney Gilbert (Mildred) of Rivera Beach, FL; three daughters: Debbery Gilbert of Albay, GA, Sandra Anderson (Carl) of Fort Pierce, FL, Linda Gilbert of Daytona Beach, FL; grandchildren of whom she raised:  Tshaya Jackson (Sammy) of Lawrenceville, GA, Ariel McCarty (Grady) of Port St. Lucie, FL, Jameson Wright of Daytona Beach, FL, Jamel Wright of Hinesville, GA; sisters: Mildred Nicholls and Janie Mae Gaddist of Charleston; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
